The FedEx Freight Distribution Center is the link between airport and cargo van. Morning freight from airline containers is sorted, placed on conveyor belts, and finally put onto vans. In the evening, this process is reversed.  Working closely with FedEx industrial engineers, our role was to integrate the building infrastructure with the new sort system to maximize the speed with which vans retrieve their cargo and exit the station. With a van capacity of 180 and almost 200,000 square feet, Pier 40 is the largest FedEx station in New York City.  Gertler & Wente Architects was responsible for all architectural and engineering disciplines.
