York & Sawyer’s Pershing Square Building is at the corner of Park Avenue and 42nd Street. The high-profile and high-traffic site is across from Grand Central Terminal with subway access on Park Avenue. Our client desired a full renovation of the 6,000 sf lobby to address the 25-storied building's “lack of building identity." Our solution recessed the entrance by eight feet and bridged the space with a steel and glass canopy arching over the sidewalk an additional eight feet. The canopy’s geometry is similar to the adjacent viaduct that connects Park Avenue to Grand Central Station and spans over 42nd Street. Widening the entrance by one full column bay and moving the concierge desk and security turn styles forward allowed for open circulation inside the lobby. Lighted glass fins mounted in arched recesses in the ceiling delineate entrances to elevator banks. The original limestone walls were preserved.
